Pohe


Pohe is one of the beloved and healthy breakfasts in Maharashtra. It is loved to such an extent that it is the only dish served when prospective grooms visit a girl’s home.

Ingredients

  1. Thick Pohe – 1 cup
  2. Chopped Onion – 1 medium
  3. Chopped Green chili – 3
  4. Coriander – Finely chopped
  5. Turmeric – 1/2 tsp
  6. Cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp
  7. Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
  8. Curry leaves – 4-5
  9. Salt – to taste
  10. Sugar – 1/4 tsp
  11. Oil – 4 tsp
  12. Potato – 1 medium (Optional)
  13. Peanuts – 10-12 (Optional)
  14. Grated Coconut – 4 tsp (Optional)

Recipe

  1. Peel and cut the potato in small cubes
  2. Soak pohe in cold water for 10 seconds. Then drain all the water.
  3. Heat oil in a wide, thick pan.
  4. Add cumin, mustard seeds.
  5. Add onion, green chili and curry leaves
  6. Add potato and peanuts.
  7. Lower the flame and cook covered for 2 minutes
  8. Once the potato is turned soft, add turmeric powder
  9. Add the soaked pohe, sugar and salt.
  10. Mix carefully, add a little oil if it becomes too dry.
  11. Cook covered for another 3-4 minutes on medium flame.
  12. Decorate the dish with Shev(Indian snack), grated coconut, coriander and a piece of lemon.

If you don’t put potato, there is no need to cook it covered. Add turmeric powder and pohe right after the onion turns soft and light brown.
