Pohe is one of the beloved and healthy breakfasts in Maharashtra. It is loved to such an extent that it is the only dish served when prospective grooms visit a girl’s home.

Pohe
Ingredients
- Thick Pohe – 1 cup
- Chopped Onion – 1 medium
- Chopped Green chili – 3
- Coriander – Finely chopped
- Turmeric – 1/2 tsp
- Cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp
- Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
- Curry leaves – 4-5
- Salt – to taste
- Sugar – 1/4 tsp
- Oil – 4 tsp
- Potato – 1 medium (Optional)
- Peanuts – 10-12 (Optional)
- Grated Coconut – 4 tsp (Optional)
Recipe
- Peel and cut the potato in small cubes
- Soak pohe in cold water for 10 seconds. Then drain all the water.
- Heat oil in a wide, thick pan.
- Add cumin, mustard seeds.
- Add onion, green chili and curry leaves
- Add potato and peanuts.
- Lower the flame and cook covered for 2 minutes
- Once the potato is turned soft, add turmeric powder
- Add the soaked pohe, sugar and salt.
- Mix carefully, add a little oil if it becomes too dry.
- Cook covered for another 3-4 minutes on medium flame.
- Decorate the dish with Shev(Indian snack), grated coconut, coriander and a piece of lemon.
If you don’t put potato, there is no need to cook it covered. Add turmeric powder and pohe right after the onion turns soft and light brown.
